Repair or Replace: How to Decide What to Do with A Broken Appliance

What to Do with A Broken Appliance

A broken appliance can be a major inconvenience while costing you both time and money. When an appliance does break down, regardless of whether it is a refrigerator or a washing machine, you are often faced with the difficult choice of trying to get the problem fixed or replacing the unit. Here are a few things to consider when deciding between repair and replacement:

What to Do with A Broken Appliance

Cost: Most modern appliances tend to come with a hefty price tag. However, certain repairs can also be expensive. When trying to decide, it is helpful to compare the cost of the repairs to the cost of a new unit. This type of comparison is especially useful when the appliance is fairly new and unlikely to continue breaking down. In many cases, though exceptions apply, it is cheaper to repair a broken appliance than to buy a new one.

Age of the Appliance: In general, older appliances tend to have more problems than their newer counterparts. Many appliances have a suggested average age and, if your appliance is very much past that age, it may be time to consider a replacement because another breakdown may be imminent.

Appliance History: Having an appliance that has recently been repaired break down again is particularly frustrating. If you’ve been dealing with a problematic appliance for some time and have had to perform multiple repairs, it may be time for a replacement.

The Environment: From an environmental standpoint, it is better to repair rather than replace. This is because discarded appliances end up in our landfills and an appliance that is replaced too soon is just one large piece of trash taking up space. This is not to say, however, that you need to keep your refrigerator from 40 years ago if it’s broken down for the tenth time in the past month.

Convenience: A broken down appliance can ruin your day, if not your entire week. However, having to decide on and purchase a new appliance can also be draining. Depending on your personal preference, it may be more convenient for you to repair the problem rather than to go out and find the replacement.

The Technician’s Assessment: Most of us are not experts when it comes to the inner workings of our appliances. Fortunately, the technicians that come out to fix the problem can often give us plenty of information and advice on the best course of action.

Your appliances are an integral part of your home, and the above tips can help you decide how to deal with them when they break down.
