Fridge Not Cooling? This May Be the Reason

Fridge Not Cooling

If your food is going bad before the expiration date, your refrigerator’s temperature may be to blame. If your fridge isn’t keeping your food cool, your food will spoil more quickly. Fortunately, there are plenty of easy ways to troubleshoot a fridge that doesn’t seem to be cooling properly.

  1. Check Your Temperature Controls: If your fridge is full or if you’re constantly moving items around, it’s easy to knock your temperature gauge out of place. The easiest thing to do is to check your controls to ensure that they are set properly. If your gauge is in the right place, make sure it isn’t broken.
  2. Clean Your Condenser Coils: If you haven’t cleaned your coils in a while, these could be the reason that your fridge isn’t cooling. Try unplugging your fridge and running a vacuum cleaner gently over the coils and then plug it back in.
  3. Check for Leaky Door Gaskets: The door gasket is the rubbery material that helps create a seal between your refrigerator door and the rest of the unit. A good seal and a functioning door are important for maintaining the internal temperature of your fridge. Your fridge may be working well but if your door is broken or if the gasket is leaking, all of the cold is escaping into your kitchen. To troubleshoot, look for tears or cracks in the gasket and make sure that your door closes well.
  4. Too Much Food: When it comes to food in your fridge, more is not always better- at least when it comes to keeping your fridge in good condition. There’s a reason that most refrigerators list a suggested capacity for items. If your refrigerator is overstocked, there isn’t enough airflow to cool everything. Make sure that your food isn’t blocking air vents and try downsizing the amount of food in your unit before you assume that something else is wrong.
  5. Clogged or Frozen Vents: Sometimes, the vents between your freezer and fridge may become clogged with ice which will prevent airflow. Try finding and checking your vents to see if they’re frozen.
