Washing Machine Overflowing? Here’s What You Can Do

Washing Machine Overflowing

An overflowing washing mashing can be both scary and messy. Now, you have water on your laundry room floor and no idea where it’s coming from. Fortunately, a lot of washer overflow problems are an easy fix and some can even be done without calling for repairs.

When it comes to fixing home appliances, some people are completely comfortable while others are not. Depending on your personal preferences, you may want to call a repairman the moment your washer starts leaking. If you want to try and fix the problem yourself first, here are a few tips:

Figure Out the Problem: There can be a few reasons that your washer is overflowing. One thing you can do is fill the machine up halfway before unplugging it. If the water is running even though your washing machine is unplugged, you probably have a problem with your inlet valve or water level switch.

Troubleshooting the Water Level Switch: The water level switch tells your washer when its time to stop filling. If the switch is damaged or if the tube connection to the switch has come off, your machine doesn’t know when to stop adding water which results in overflow.

To check on or replace the switch, you’ll want to remove the dial that allows you to select load size. You’ll also need to remove the end caps and screws from the control panel because you’ll want that panel up and out of the way. If you see that something has come loose, you can try reattaching it or simply replace the switch.

Troubleshooting the Water Inlet Valve

If the pressure switch looks fine, your problem may be with the water inlet valve. The water inlet valve is typically located behind the control panel so you’ll need to unplug and remove the plastic end caps as well as the panel itself. Before attempting to do anything to your water inlet valve, you’ll want to cut off your water supply and make sure that you’re drying spills with towels before you touch the wiring. Not sure where your water inlet valve is located? Try checking your instruction manual.
