FAQs About Refrigerators

While most of us don’t think about our refrigerators on a daily basis, questions do occasionally arise about how a fridge should function. At Best Price Appliance Repair, we know that knowledge is power, which is why we are happy to offer answers to these most commonly asked refrigerator questions:
What is the right temperature for my fridge?
The average refrigerator should run at 36-38 degrees Fahrenheit. If your fridge temperature is significantly higher, or lower, this could signal a problem.
I just got a new fridge. Should I keep my owner’s manual?
Yes! We recommend keeping the owner’s manual for all of your appliances as these manuals contain useful information that you may need later.
Is that a normal sound?
Your refrigerator will make sounds when it runs, which is normal. If you have a defrost timer, this will typically make a clicking sound as well. Meanwhile, a gurgling or knocking sounds means that the refrigerant is circulating. Finally, your ice maker might produce a humming sound while it fills with water.
If you hear your refrigerator making a new sound, this could be a problem. However, take a moment to make sure that this sound is, in fact, new, and not something you’ve previously ignored. If you’re not sure, give us a call and we’ll be happy to help you troubleshoot the problem.
How often should I do maintenance on my fridge?
Keeping your refrigerator in good condition does require occasional maintenance. You’ll need to examine and clean your door seals to ensure that they are still functional and clean of debris twice a year. It’s also a good idea to clean your condenser coils by vacuuming them with a brush attachment on a bi-annual basis.
How long will my refrigerator last?
The average refrigerator has a lifespan of about 15 years. You can optimize your refrigerator and increase its lifespan via regular maintenance.
Do I need to clean the inside of my refrigerator?
Again, yes. Spills, debris, and other food and drink particles can cause odors and bacteria to build up in your fridge. It is recommended that you clean your refrigerator at least once a month with a sponge. For tough odors or stains, you can use a mild detergent or baking soda.
Should my refrigerator be running?
If your refrigerator is running all the time, make sure that it is not positioned too close to the wall as this can put pressure on the mechanism. You can also check your gasket and ensure that your condensing coils are clean. If you’re still having trouble, you may need a refrigerator repair, in which case we are happy to send over one of our specialists.
