Gas Versus Electric Stoves

There are pros and cons to both gas and electric stoves. When you’re choosing between the two, the main factors that contribute to the decision of which to choose include price, safety, energy sources, and quality.
Price
Money is a big factor when choosing between gas and electric stoves. Electric stoves cost less upfront, but they may cost more to use over time since electric stoves consume more energy than gas. Gas stoves may require a higher initial investment upfront, but they are cheaper to use than electric which may save you money on your utility bills. In most states, the cost of natural gas is lower than the cost of electricity.
Safety
When using a gas stove, you are using an open flame, which means nearby objects such as dish towels or clothing could catch fire. If a burner isn’t all the way off, there may be a gas leak in your home. Electric stoves aren’t as likely to set flammable objects on fire and there’s no chance of a gas leak with an electric stove. However, electric stoves aren’t completely without danger since you or your children can still get a burn from hot coils or flat tops.
Energy Sources
Your location may be a factor. If your home doesn’t have a gas line, you’ll be restricted to choosing an electric stove. Most if not all kitchens have a 240-volt power outlet, which is what is required for an electric stove. Since they don’t have to be hooked up to a gas line, electric stoves are easier to install.
Cooking Quality
For those who enjoy cooking, the open flame of a gas stove allows for a more accurate temperature reading. There’s better heat distribution in a gas stove and they cook things more thoroughly. Water usually takes longer to boil on an electric stove.

Choosing between a gas or electric stove often comes down to personal preference. Whenever you buy an appliance, you’re making a large investment into something that you expect to be able to use for many years to come.
