It’s Time to Think About Your Washer and Dryer During the Holidays

It is that time of year again. The holidays are upon us. While many of us are looking forward to having family coming for Thanksgiving, gathering around the table, and enjoying family time together. There’ll be tree trimming soon, or menorah lighting. Lots of food, laughter, joy and music. While you contemplate the joy of the holidays, have you considered the extra workload that your washer and dryer will be taking on over the holiday season? Let us give you some more information on washers and dryers, so that you–and your washer and dryer – are ready for the busy holiday season.

Your Washer and Dryer on Overload
Did you know that you can overload both your washer and your dryer? While you might not overload your washer and dryer during a normal week, it is easy to do during the holidays. Think about all of the extra washes you are doing. Perhaps you have extra guests in your house for a few days, and they will have clothes. You’ll also be washing table linens, blankets, bedspreads, throw pillows, and anything else your guests could stain. It’s also the season for sports. You may be washing sports gear from football, basketball and hockey.
All of this adds up to problems for your washer or dryer. First, overloading your washer means that you might damage your washer’s drum. The drum is the part of your washer that swishes your clothes around to clean them. If you overload your washer, your washer may stop working efficiently. You may also find that your washer no longer gets your clothes clean, which means that you have to do the same load multiple times. If you overload your washer too many times, it will stop working altogether.
Overloading your dryer has the same effect. Your dryer also has a drum that turns the clothes to dry them. Overloading it means that your dryer will not work efficiently, and the motor on the dryer will eventually burn out.
Tips
The last thing you want to have happen during the holidays is a bill for a new washer and dryer. To make sure that doesn’t happen, here are a few tips. Wash and dry smaller loads, rather than larger ones. Make sure that you wash and dry heavy items separately. If the items you need to wash are too heavy or bulky, consider taking those items to a laundry service. Be sure that you are using detergent that is specific to the needs of your washer.
