Making the Most Out of Your Dryer

dryer

Having a dryer in your home is great. In fact, most of us don’t quite appreciate having a dryer unless it breaks down. Here are a few easy-to-follow tips to keep your dryer in top shape while also saving yourself a bit of cash:

Clean the Lint Trap: Cleaning the lint trap is extremely important because a clogged lint trap is a fire hazard waiting to happen. However, a clean lint trap can also ensure that your dryer is using less energy, thus making your dryer energy efficient.

For best results, give your lint trap a good scrub once a month to clean out the smaller bits and any residue from dryer sheets.

Go Automatic: New model dryers have a moisture sensor that turns off the dryer after the moisture is gone. This feature helps prevent over-drying and saves you energy compared to a standard timed cycle.

Strategy is Key: Some fabrics dry faster than others so try grouping them to save time and energy. For instance, dry all of your lightweight cotton clothing together and your towels together. This helps ensure that some clothing isn’t over dried and will help shorten your drying time. If you have multiple clothing types, dry the easier ones first, and use the residual heat from the first drying cycle to help with the heavier fabrics.

Airdry When Possible: Airdrying your clothes when possible not only gives your dryer a break but also helps extend the life of your clothes. While airdrying isn’t always possible, we do recommend giving it a try if the weather is warm and you have the space to hang your clothes and linens. If you have a mixed load, consider airdrying clothing that’s lighter as these will dry faster.

Save Yourself Some Ironing Time: If you fold or hang your clothes while they’re still hot, you can probably get away without ironing. Of course, some exceptions will apply.

Optimizing Longevity

To optimize the longevity of your dryer, we recommend fixing problems as quickly as they arise. A small problem can quickly grow into a big hassle if it isn’t addressed promptly.
