Oven Not Heating? Here’s How to Troubleshoot

oven

Unless you subsist solely on takeout, you probably use your oven on at least a semi-regular basis. And, when the oven suddenly decides to stop heating, you’re going to need to fix the problem quickly. Sure, you can get by using the microwave for a few days but, eventually, you’ll need to get your oven working again, or at least find someone who can help.

Fortunately, there may be an easy way to troubleshoot the problem.

Electric Ovens

In case you weren’t sure about the type of oven that you have been using, electrical ovens typically don’t have an open flame when turned on. You can also look at the name of your oven and double-check online.

Heating Element Malfunctions: A heating element malfunction is one of the most common reasons for an oven not to heat. When you turn on your electric oven, the heating element should start gloving bright red. If it doesn’t glow, the heating element is likely broken and needs to be fixed or replaced.

Defective Sensor: The oven’s temperature is typically monitored by a temperature sensor. If the temperature sensor is defective, it may keep your oven from reaching the desired temperature. If your heating element is working properly, replacing the sensor will likely get your oven working again.

Gas Ovens

If your oven usually has an open flame when turned on, and if it is connected to a gas valve, you have a gas oven. If a gas oven isn’t heating, here’s how to troubleshoot:

Thermostat Damage: Just like electric ovens, gas ovens rely on their thermostat to keep the temperature constant. Even a small problem with your thermostat can keep your oven from reaching desired temperatures.

Calibration Issues: Most gas ovens have a calibration dial in the back of the oven. This dial can be used to recalibrate an oven if it’s running too cold or too hot, and it’s fairly easy to do.

Ignitor Damage: If you notice that one of your ignitors is out, this can also cause your oven not to heat properly. A broken igniter should be promptly repaired or replaced to keep your oven in good shape.
