Problems with Your Stove Igniter?

Problems with Your Stove Igniter

The part that produces the spark that allows the burners on a gas stove to work is called an igniter. It’s a fairly common problem for the igniter to eventually cause problems or stop working altogether. Your LA county appliance repair company is only a phone call away if you’re having problems with your stove igniter, but before you call for service, you may want to see if cleaning it helps.

How to Clean a Stove Igniter

Preparing food frequently involves spills, and sometimes you don’t even see where the spills went. Here are the steps to take to clean your stove igniter:

  1. Make sure the gas is turned off. Since natural gas is very flammable, make sure your gas is all the way off before you start cleaning. Move the stove and turn the gas off from the valves behind the stove. If you just turn it off at the knobs, there’s a risk that you might turn it back on as you clean, so it’s better to make sure it’s completely shut off.
  2. Locate the igniter. If you have a sealed burner, you should be able to see a small nozzle on top of the stove where the gas is released. With a standard gas stove, you’ll need to lift the top of the stove to find the igniters.
  3. Remove grease and spills from the igniter. Clean spills and particles from the igniter using an old toothbrush and a small amount of water. If there’s a pilot hole, you may need a needle to clear the hole to allow a better spark.
  4. Wipe down the igniter. Once the toothbrush has loosened debris, wipe it away with a rag. Wipe down the igniter that’s not working correctly as well as the ones that aren’t causing problems yet.

After you’ve cleaned the igniters off, try turning the gas back on and see if you’re able to get the igniter to work. If it does, you’re all set for now. If you’re still having problems, it’s time to call a repairman.
