Refrigerator Not Cooling? Here’s How to Troubleshoot

Refrigerator Not Cooling

A refrigerator that isn’t cooling can be pretty frustrating. After all, if a fridge can’t keep your food cold, then what’s the point of having one? Before you get frustrated, try these easy troubleshooting tips:

Check the Doors

If you notice that your fridge is suddenly warmer than usual, consider the possibility that the door wasn’t closed all the way. This is easy enough to check- simply close your refrigerator door firmly and wait for about half an hour. If it feels cooler, this was probably the initial problem.

While you’re at this, check the gasket seals to make sure that cold air isn’t escaping. This is easy to do with a dollar or sheet of paper- place the paper into the door and close it. If you can easily pull it out, something is wrong with the gasket seal.

Another thing to consider is the door switch. If your fridge is designed to stop cooling as soon as the door is open, check to make sure that the switch isn’t jamming.

Is This Thing On?

Start with making sure that your fridge is actually plugged in and getting enough power. Check to make sure that your fridge is plugged in all the way and that your power cable is intact. You should also make sure that the sockets are at full power.

Check the Thermostat

It’s easy to accidentally bump your thermostat and accidentally mess with the temperature in your fridge. Taking a quick look at the thermostat and re-adjusting as necessary can save you a call to the technician.

Unblock the Vents

Make sure that there are no food or beverages blocking cool air from circulating. Find the vents in your fridge and in your freezer and make sure to keep those clear of items.

Check Out the Mechanism

The fan, coil, and compressor are all vital components of your fridge. Make sure that these parts, especially your coils, are clear of dust and debris. For best results and to avoid electrocution, you’ll want to turn off your fridge before you clean.

Make Some Space

If your fridge is too full, you may be limiting circulation and overwhelming the mechanism.
